The Return of the Puget Organ in December,
2008
Appeal
letter
from
Mrs Ann Henderson
President, The Chapel Society,
Kincoppal-Rose Bay School of the Sacred Heart |
As we approach the end of four years of restoration of
the Puget organ in France, and with the return of the organ now imminent,
I am making an appeal to your generosity for a donation in the new Financial
Year 2008/2009.
We face the enormous cost of the re-installation, freight, insurance
and other charges in connection with the restoration and the long-awaited
return of the organ in December, 2008.
We had been encouraged to apply for another Grant from NSW Heritage
Office and were disappointed to be advised that we will not be receiving
any funding in the recently announced 2008/9 Grants.
We need to raise approximately $50,000 by February/March 2009 when the
restoration work is finished to cover costs associated with its return
as set out below. All work done is of the highest standard and
the skilled restorer is doing an exceptional job which will stand proudly
beside any comparable organ restoration of its kind in the world.
While on a private visit to France in September/October, I will take
the opportunity to visit the organ builder (Charles Henry) and consultant
(Michel Colin) in Provence, inspect the finished organ, and finalise
all the details of the organ’s return in December. Charles
Henry and his son Ionathan will arrive in Sydney ready to begin work
when the organ returns just before Christmas. They will be joined by
the Consultant in February to finalise the installation by mid-March.
We will then arrange the Gala Inaugural Concert to be given by Professor
Colin.
The Contract Price of €177,512 ($290,000) has been funded
by:
- Private donations from alumnae, parents and friends ($150,000);
- Many fund-raising events held in the Chapel and elsewhere; ($50,000)
- Gift of Console from NSW Sacré Coeur Association ($12,100);
- Roger Woodward’s donation of a recital in 2007 ($12,000);
- The School ($30,000 3 years ago),
- NSW Heritage Office ($26,500 2 years ago),
- The Society of the Sacred Heart ($10,000).
This is no small achievement when one considers the amount
raised from pipe sponsorships both large and small and the generosity
and commitment of a small and hard-working committee.

The balance to be raised will cover |
| cost of return freight |
approximately $21,000 |
| charges for the Consultant |
$20,000 |
| cost of Shipping Agent |
$3000 |
| costs of the freight company in Sydney |
(quote pending) |
| cost of local organ building workers who will assist Charles and
his son Ionathan during part of the installation |
(unknown at this time) |
| Economy Air fares for the organ builders and Consultant |
($10,-12,000) which includes air freight of their tools |
I am making applications to several Foundations and hope we may be
given favourable consideration.
Please make your tax deductible donation
a little early this year either by sponsoring a pipe or sending a
cheque to Kincoppal-Rose Bay Chapel Society. If you wish a tax
deduction please make your cheque payable to KRB
Building Fund-Chapel and send them to the address below.
You donation will make it possible to finish the restoration and assist
us to bring the organ home.
Thank you for your continuing support.
Sincerely,
Ann Henderson
